Amazon eyes Ghana for digital connectivity partnership
Ghana’s drive to forge stronger strategic partnerships with some of the world’s leading corporations received fresh momentum following high-level discussions between President John Dramani Mahama and senior executives of Amazon on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The meeting forms part of President Mahama’s broader push to reposition Ghana’s relationship with major American corporations around investment, technology, skills, productive enterprise and job creation, rather than traditional development assistance alone.
At a separate U.S.–Ghana Presidential Roundtable this week, President Mahama called for the next chapter of Ghana–U.S. relations to place greater emphasis on trade, investment, technology and strategic partnerships.
In a significant public endorsement following the meeting, David Zapolsky, Amazon’s Senior Vice President and Chief Global Affairs & Legal Officer, described his engagement with President Mahama as productive and highlighted Ghana’s potential role in Amazon’s efforts to expand broadband connectivity in Africa.
Zapolsky oversees Amazon’s legal, policy, compliance and regulatory affairs.
The Amazon engagement underscores an increasingly important dimension of Ghana’s economic diplomacy: using high-level diplomatic relationships to open doors to global capital, technology, expertise and markets.
The engagement with Amazon therefore carries significance beyond broadband connectivity.
Improved high-speed internet access, particularly in rural and underserved communities, could potentially support digital education, healthcare delivery, financial inclusion, agriculture, entrepreneurship, e-commerce and the participation of young Ghanaians in the global digital economy.
It could also strengthen Ghana’s ambition to become a competitive digital and technology hub for West Africa, while using its position as host of the AfCFTA Secretariat to provide international businesses with a gateway into the wider African market.
