A newsreader was murdered in cold blood during a live broadcast after two gunmen forced their way into his studio while presenting his regular lunchtime show.
Gleydson Carvalho was killed in 2015 when his assailants got into his office under the pretence of wanting to buy advertising space before bursting into his recording studio and commanding his sound technician to conceal himself beneath a desk.
They then shot the radio presenter, an outspoken critic of Brazilian government corruption, three times - hitting him once in the head and twice in the chest, El Pais reported.
The horrifying murder occurred at Radio Liberdade FM in Camocim, a seaside resort town in the north-eastern state of Ceara.
The killers escaped on a white motorcycle while their victim was rushed to hospital, but he tragically succumbed to his injuries during the journey, reports the Daily Star.
The attack happened during a short music interval in the radio programme. A colleague announced the host had been shot and was receiving medical attention before resuming with some music.
Gleydson was known locally for his criticism of municipal government corruption. His friend, Autran Santos, disclosed he would regularly face intimidation while broadcasting live.
"He spoke to me constantly about the threats but said he wasn't afraid," he said. "The most serious threats he received were to do with politics. He said he had enemies because of the accusations he made."
Gleydson's solicitor Marcos Coelho said: "I never imagined something like this could happen in our city. "This is a crime that deserves the most rigorous investigation possible by the authorities."
Officers detained two people suspected of involvement in Gleydson's killing, yet the two gunmen responsible remain at large, according to G1.
The state government confirmed that Military Police had been given priority over the case.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) denounced the killing, with the organisation's Americas research associate Sara Rafsky stating: "Authorities must take action to combat a press freedom crisis that is violating the right of all Brazilians to be informed, not to mention ending journalists' lives."
He was the fourth journalist to die in Brazil in 2015, according to CPJ.
Paraguayan Gerardo Ceferino Servían Coronel, also a radio journalist, was fatally shot six times in Ponta Porã, Brazil. Blogger Evany José Metzker's decapitated body, bearing signs of torture, was discovered in Minas Gerais on May 18.
Six days later, the tortured remains of community radio journalist Djalma Santos da Conceição were found in the state of Bahia. Masked men had abducted him from a bar the previous evening.
CPJ reported that none of these cases have been resolved.
In April 2019, a Brazilian court in Camocim handed down sentences totalling a combined 73 years in prison to three individuals for their roles in Gleydson's murder. Thiago Lemos da Silva was identified as the gunman who stormed the studio and shot Carvalho dead.
He received a 27-year prison sentence. Gisele Sousa do Nascimento was apprehended by authorities shortly after the killing, receiving a 23-year sentence for providing assistance and a safe house.
Regina Rocha Lopes was also handed a 23-year term for her part in orchestrating the crime.
