Exclusive: What do B.C.’s three main party leaders own?
OneBC’s Dallas Brodie, the incumbent in Vancouver-Quilchena, will not end the Oct. 24 election as Premier of British Columbia. But she is already the undisputed champ among the five party leaders in the category of biggest real estate portfolio.
theBreaker inspected statements of disclosure filed with Elections BC for Brodie and the leaders of CentreBC, Conservative Party of B.C., B.C. Greens and the NDP.
Brodie reports income from the Legislature and Three Cedars Holdings Inc., and interest in one Creston property (assessed at $1.2 million) and two in Gibsons ($1.86 million and $1.74 million, respectively). She did not list any liabilities.
Under corporate assets, there are four separate bare trusts that hold a combined $40 million in four Vancouver apartment buildings.
The one with the highest assessed value is a $17.5 million, five-storey apartment building on Comox Street beside Stanley Park in Vancouver’s West End. It is registered to Parkside Title Ltd., a 100% subsidiary of Three Cedars.
The asset list for the NDP’s David Eby (Vancouver-Point Grey) includes: mutual funds held inside a registered plan, RRSP, TFSA and RESP hold mail account.
“All trading discretionary, administered by an investment advisor. Prior advice and contents of portfolio not disclosed.”
Eby has a vehicle loan from CIBC, but no corporate assets.
His nominators include longtime NDP insider Bill Tieleman, Nch’Kay Development Corp. chair and former BC Ferries chair Joy MacPhail, Vancouver-Quilchena candidate Callista Ryan and ex-NDP Premier Mike Harcourt.
Conservative Lorne Doerkson (Cariboo-Chilcotin) shows interest in Shelanda Holdings Corp., a dormant company with no assets or liability.
Doerkson investments include RSP, TFSA, LIRA (locked-in retirement account), all in cash. The only real property listed is in Williams Lake and it is valued at $535,500.
CentreBC’s Eleanor Sturko (Surrey South) has shares in Manulife Wealth, Berkshire Hathaway, Costco Wholesale, Microsoft, S&P 500, Apple Inc., Fidelity Canadian, Schwab Storage, CCM Global Equity, Fidelity Equity, Fidelity High Income and Fidelity Growth.
Sturko’s income is from two sources, the Legislature and Veterans Affairs Canada (as a retired Mountie). Her form shows no liabilities or real property.
B.C. Greens’ leader Emily Lowan (Saanich North and the Islands) is blank except for employment with the B.C. Green Party.
