Cairo, Sept 4:
At least 16 people were killed and 28 others injured after a passenger bus overturned on the Dahab-Nuweiba road in Egypt’s South Sinai governorate on Wednesday, according to the Egyptian Health Ministry.
The accident occurred before the Al-Saada area as the bus was travelling towards Nuweiba, a popular tourist destination along the Red Sea coast.
The authorities rushed 20 ambulances to the accident site to provide first aid and evacuate the injured to nearby medical facilities. The injured were taken to hospitals for treatment, with medical teams monitoring their condition.
Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar directed officials to ensure that the injured receive the necessary medical treatment, while Social Solidarity Minister Maya Morsy ordered emergency assistance for those affected by the accident.
Reports said several Jordanian nationals were among those travelling on the bus. Jordanian authorities confirmed casualties among its citizens, though details were still emerging.
The cause of the crash had not been officially established. The incident occurred in a region known for its tourist resorts, marine activities and mountain trails.
Egypt has witnessed several serious road accidents in recent months, renewing concerns over road safety and traffic enforcement.
