The Ministry of Transportation of China launched a special operation in the eastern waters of Taiwan starting on the 6th. National Security Council Secretary-General Wu Zhao-xie recently posted a map on X showing the situation in the eastern waters of Taiwan, indicating that Chinese maritime police vessels approached to 32 nautical miles off the eastern coast of Taiwan on the 9th. Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung stated yesterday that China has no right to intervene in the eastern waters of Taiwan, whether it concerns Taiwan's sovereignty or jurisdiction. He urged everyone not to fall into China's narrative framework and cognitive warfare manipulation of "fake law enforcement, real expansion."
Japan and the Philippines have initiated negotiations on the delimitation of their exclusive economic zones (EEZ). Recently, China has dispatched maritime police and government vessels to conduct law enforcement patrols in the eastern waters of Taiwan. On the 9th, Wu Zhao-xie said on X that China's maritime patrol and police vessels are harassing merchant ships within Taiwan's EEZ, attempting to create a false impression that the People's Republic of China has jurisdiction. Such expansionist actions are a major escalation of regional tensions, and he called on all merchant ships in the area to refuse to respond to Chinese maritime police calls.
Lin Chia-lung said in an interview yesterday that Japan informed our side in advance about the Japan-Philippines EEZ negotiations, and the Philippines also expressed that this is the first time it has negotiated this issue with Japan and does not involve Taiwan. As for our stance, Taiwan's sovereignty, fishing rights, and maritime rights, especially the rights of fishermen to operate, will be ensured.
Lin pointed out that China is using fake law enforcement to carry out expansion. The Republic of China and the People's Republic of China have separate sovereignties, and China has no right to intervene in the eastern waters of Taiwan. China's expansion is not just about disrupting the status quo but aims to create a new normal through actions, making it a problem creator that undermines the status quo. Taiwan will work together with like-minded countries to respond and prevent China's military expansion from the Taiwan Strait, the first island chain, and even to the second island chain.
Secretary-General of the Executive Yuan Chang Tun-han said that China's actions not only harm our national sovereignty but also violate relevant international laws and conventions. Our navy and coast guard are closely monitoring the situation. "We will not yield an inch of our blue maritime territory."
Regarding the Kuomintang legislators' proposal to amend the Nationality Law, DPP legislator Wang Ding-yu criticized that the amendment would allow Chinese nationals to run for public office, even the presidency. Kuomintang caucus secretary-general Lin Pei-hsiang retorted that the law is clearly written, and the ruling party is spreading rumors. He said that more attention should be paid to the Japan-Philippines EEZ negotiations, where the reality is that the Republic of China is not at the negotiating table.
