Seven week coastal defence upgrade has begun on beaches across Christchurch

Coastal defence upgrades is under way along a stretch of seafront in Christchurch between Avon Beach and Highcliffe.

The essential beach maintenance scheme, which began this week and is expected to last up to seven weeks, aims to strengthen existing defences and protect the coastline from future erosion.

Funded by a £380,000 grant from the Wessex Regional Flood and Coastal Committee with additional support from BCP Council and Christchurch Town Council.

The work includes upgrading groynes with new rock armour, replacing markers, and redistributing built-up beach material from Highcliffe to nearby areas.

Cllr Andy Hadley, BCP Council’s portfolio holder for climate response, environment and energy, said: “Christchurch and Highcliffe’s coastline is a valuable asset, enjoyed by residents and visitors throughout the year and important to protect for future generations.

“By investing in the upkeep of our coastline, we are helping to preserve these much-loved beaches, support local communities and businesses, and strengthen the area’s resilience to future coastal challenges.”

While the beach and promenade will remain open throughout the works, certain areas may need to be temporarily cordoned off to safely carry out the scheduled works.

Residents and visitors are being asked to follow on-site signage, stay clear of working areas and machinery, and keep dogs on leads where requested.
