Numbers Don't Lie: Europe Has Excess Clean Technology Capacity

European manufacturers already have sufficient capacity to meet domestic demand for clean technologies, including wind turbines, electric vehicles and heat pumps, according to a report by the energy analytics center Ember. Production of wind turbines and electric vehicles in 2025 was almost double the number installed or sold across Europe, while production capacity for heat pumps exceeded demand three times, BTA quoted the summarized data in the report.

The Numbers

European exports of wind turbines and electric vehicles exceeded 30 billion euros ($34.6 billion) last year. Electric vehicles alone have reduced oil consumption by over 10 billion liters, saving about 4.1 billion euros in import costs.

Dependence on Fossil Fuels

Despite these achievements, Europe remains "heavily dependent on fossil fuel markets," the report says. About 85 percent of the bloc's fossil fuel supplies are imported from countries outside the European Union, making energy costs and economic stability vulnerable to external market shocks. Ember estimates that the sharp rise in fossil fuel prices seen in the early months of the war in Iran increased Europe's energy costs by 18.5 billion euros. The European Commission recently said the bloc's costs for importing fossil fuels increased by 47 billion euros in the first 100 days of the conflict. The report says that wider electrification could reduce Europe's dependence on fossil fuel imports and improve both energy security and affordability.
