During exhumation works on the territory of the former village of Volia Ostrovetska in Volyn region, the remains of 32 people killed during World War II were found.
This was reported by Suspilne Lutsk, Ukrinform reports.
"As of July 20, the remains of 32 people killed during World War II were found on the territory of the former village of Volia Ostrovetska, Kovel district," said Doctor of Historical Sciences, representative of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, Yaroslav Onyshchuk.
According to him, the burial pit where the exhumation works are ongoing is six meters long and two meters wide.
Also, Polish and Ukrainian scientists found rings, beads, buttons, body crosses and small icons at the burial sites.
As Ukrinform reported, on July 14, exhumation works began in Volyn region on the territory of the former villages of Ostrovky and Volia Ostrovetska. On the Ukrainian side, they are carried out by a team of the specialized institution "Volyn Antiquities", on the Polish side by employees of the Institute of National Remembrance of Poland and the Wrocław Medical University.
Exhumation works will take place at three locations: "Volia Ostrovetska-1", "Ostrovky-1" and "Ostrovky-2" - these are two mass graves and a single burial. Supervision and advisory support are provided by specialists of the search work of the Municipal Enterprise of Lviv Oblast Council "Dolya". In parallel with the exhumation, search works will continue on the territory of both villages.
