The area restriction for the Ezra Creek wildfire north of Castlegar will be lifted effective at noon on Friday, Sept. 18, although the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) continues to respond to the fire.
The lightning-caused wildfire, discovered on Aug. 25, is now under control. It burned 143 hectares before being contained through BCWS fire suppression efforts and favourable weather.
BCWS states the restriction is no longer necessary due to decreased fire behaviour and activity, but advises caution.
BCWS warns that significant safety hazards may be present in areas affected by wildfires. Fire-damaged trees can be unstable and fall, and ash pits can be difficult to detect and remain hot long after the flames have died.
BCWS reminds the public that the Ezra Creek wildfire is an active worksite and to exercise caution when travelling in the area.
Officials retain the authority under the Wildfire Act and its regulations to order anyone to leave the area, even though the area restriction has been rescinded.
Smoke may still be visible within the fire’s perimeter in the coming weeks. BCWS advises that smoke appearing from well within the fire perimeter and burned material is common. However, smoke rising from green, unburned fuel or from outside a fire’s perimeter should be reported immediately.
