One dead in crash on Crown Range Road
A person is dead after a crash involving a bus and a car on the Crown Range Road this morning.
The crash happened south of Cardrona about 10.15am, closing the road.
Police initially said the driver of the car, the sole occupant, had sustained serious injuries, but in an update about 3.20pm they confirmed the person had died at the scene.
They said the Serious Crash Unit had carried out a scene examination, and the cause of the crash remained under investigation.
"Police are providing support to those involved."
The road was closed for most of the day, but reopened shortly before 8pm.
Conditions were reported as icy between Wānaka and Cardrona and leading to the Crown Range summit this morning.
An Otago Daily Times reporter at the road block just south of Cardrona this morning said a bus was allowed through the closure when he was at the scene.
Diversions were in place. An officer stationed at the road block said the road would be closed for at least four or five hours.
Meanwhile, a road snowfall warning for another alpine road, the Lindis Pass (State Highway 8), has now been lifted.
