JACKSON, Wyo. — The National Weather Service in Riverton (NWS) has issued a flood watch for northwest Wyoming this weekend.
The flood watch will be in effect from 6 p.m. on Friday until Sunday morning. NWS stated that flooding is possible due to potential excessive rainfall. Yellowstone National Park, Jackson Hole and Star Valley are included in the flood watch, as well as the Teton and Gros Ventre mountains, Absaroka Mountains, Salt River and Wyoming ranges, and the west side of the Wind River Range.
“Increased moisture from the Pacific will move across northwest Wyoming through the weekend, bringing an extended chance for showers and thunderstorms,” NWS wrote. “The increased moisture will have the potential to produce locally heavy rainfall, providing excessive runoff in flood-prone and low-lying areas.”
Folks are urged to monitor future forecasts and be alert for a possible upgrade to a flood warning. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding begin. Check out these tips for staying safe during a flood.
