Strike in France cut available capacity by 6.5 GW

In France, a strike by power sector workers overnight on September 14 reduced available generating capacity by 6.5 gigawatts. This follows from EDF data, The Hindu International reports.
Generation reduction
The main part of the reduction in electricity supply came from lower output at seven French nuclear reactors. Several hundred megawatts of gas- and hydropower-plant capacity were also unavailable.
EDF data reflected the situation after the overnight strike in the power sector. The source does not specify which reactors, gas-fired power plants or hydropower plants experienced reduced generation.

Reason for the protest
Energy sector trade unions are protesting against a recommendation to limit employee benefits, including access to electricity at reduced rates. Workers and pensioners in the French energy sector pay less for electricity, and unions consider this benefit one of the key components of their compensation package.
The strike was expected to continue throughout September 15. This meant that capacity outages could resume or their scale could increase.
