WAUSEON — Fulton County commissioners accepted two Federal Aviation Administration grants for airport improvements during a recent meeting and also approved a road vacation request.

Two resolutions were adopted by commissioners accepting the aforementioned grants.

The grant amounts are $342,475 and $513,830, and will be used for the construction/expansion of hangar space at the Fulton County Airport near Wauseon, and the construction of a taxilane measuring 195 feet by 25 feet.

During the same meeting, commissioners approved a road vacation request for Township Road 22, between roads L and M.

According to commissioners’ meeting minutes, only a 150-foot section of the road there is asphalt and stone.

The remainder is dirt, and the stretch also includes two closed bridges, one of which was recently removed. A stream crossing there is blocked with a guardrail as is the approach to the bridge that remains, according to the meeting minutes.

Commissioners took testimony during a public hearing on the matter. This included input from property owner Paul Beaverson who expressed concern about his farm being cut off, access being made possible by neighbors.

Commissioners subsequently approved a resolution authorizing the vacation request.

In other business, commissioners

• approved a resolution allowing the continuation of the county’s participation in the County Employee Benefits of Consortium for employee health insurance.

• passed a resolution accepting a workers compensation claim made by William Downing in the county’s public utilities division.

• held a work session with Fulton County Administrator Dennis Kennedy on a number of topics. Among them was a Zoom meeting with Aidan Horgan of the Coalition Against Bigger Trucks. He is requesting that commissioners sign letters of support for his organization, but no decision was made until draft letters are provided.

• discussed an EMS contract with Swanton Fire Chief Cuyler Kepling.

• met with Fulton County Clerk of Courts Tracy Zuver who explained that the county’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles will be a test site for paperless iPad processing. He told commissioners this will reduce costs.
