A recent discussion hosted by Harvard Extension School brought together Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) and cybersecurity leaders to examine the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. The panel explored how AI is fundamentally altering both the methods of cyber defense and the nature of cyberattacks.
AI's capabilities in cybersecurity include threat detection, data analysis, and automated response mechanisms. These functions aid organizations in identifying potential intrusions and malicious activities more rapidly. However, the same AI technologies are also being leveraged by malicious actors.
Cybercriminals are using AI to automate and scale their attacks, creating more convincing phishing attempts and developing sophisticated malware. This dual-use nature of AI presents a significant challenge, as it lowers the barrier to entry for cybercrime and increases the speed and targeted nature of attacks, making them harder to detect.
