A hosepipe ban is set to come into place across the county as a heatwave continues.

Anglian Water confirmed the ban is due to hot weather and "exceptional demand" for water across the East of England.

The temporary use ban will come into effect from 1am on Saturday, July 11, and anyone who flouts the ban could be liable for a fine up to £1,000.

The water company said earlier this week that a ban "couldn't be ruled out" due to the recent weeks of scorching temperatures and record-breaking figures above 35C.

The temporary use ban in Anglian Water's supply area, which includes Norfolk and Suffolk, means hosepipes cannot be used for:

  • Watering gardens and plants

  • Cleaning private vehicles

  • Cleaning paths, patios, walls, windows and other artificial surfaces

  • Filling or maintaining swimming pools, paddling pools and hot tubs

  • Filling or maintaining ponds and ornamental fountains

  • Cleaning private leisure boats

Restrictions also apply to sprinklers, pressure washers, dripper hoses and automatic irrigation systems connected to the mains water supply.

The last time a hosepipe ban was issued for the county was during 2018 when the region was hit with a period of prolonged dry weather.

There was also a ban in 2012, marking the first in more than 20 years in Suffolk.

The longest hosepipe ban in the country was in 1990 and it lasted more than 400 days due to below-average rainfall.

There are exceptions for Priority Services Register customers and activities relating to animal welfare, health and safety, religious practices and specific business needs.
