Indonesia will send Foreign Minister Sugiono and People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Ahmad Muzani to attend the funeral of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Foreign Minister Sugiono said on Monday.

“I plan to attend together with the MPR speaker,” Sugiono told reporters in Jakarta.

Khamenei was killed on Feb. 28 during joint US and Israeli airstrikes on his compound in Tehran.

Sugiono said the Indonesian government is awaiting confirmation from Iranian authorities regarding the time and venue where the Indonesian delegation will be able to participate in the funeral ceremonies.

“We are still waiting for confirmation on the schedule and the location where we can attend the funeral. As we know, there will be a series of ceremonial events as part of the funeral proceedings,” he said.

Indonesia had initially planned to send its ambassador to Iran, Rolliansyah Soemirat, to represent the country after receiving an invitation from Tehran. At the time, several senior Indonesian officials were occupied with preparations for incoming state visits and were unable to travel.

However, Sugiono said the government was informed on July 2 that Iran would only receive foreign delegations led by officials holding positions above ambassadorial rank.
