Iran rejected on Saturday the statements by US President Donald Trump about a possible declaration of the Strait of Hormuz as US territory, asserting that Hormuz cannot be conquered "with a tweet or with aircraft carriers."
"Trump said that, after Iran's defeat, he will soon declare the Strait of Hormuz US territory. The Strait of Hormuz cannot be conquered with a tweet or with aircraft carriers, nor by issuing an order or with an electoral speech," said Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, on X.
The diplomat asserted that Iran "is not intimidated by threats nor is it intimidated by displays of force" and maintained that the strait "has been, is, and will remain Iranian."
"This strait will only be closed and opened under Iran's orders, and as long as they do not accept the reality of their defeat and stop making delusional claims, Iran will continue to impose the blockade," Gharibabadi warned.
The Iranian deputy minister's statements respond to Trump's assertion that he could soon declare the Strait of Hormuz US territory "after defeating Iran."
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the main maritime routes for global oil and gas transport and has become one of the main focal points of tension between Washington and Tehran amid the military escalation in the region.
Iran and Oman are holding talks on the shared management of the Strait of Hormuz and the establishment of a new navigation route, which, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, "could conclude soon."
Araghchi said Friday night that discussions with Oman in this regard are "completely separate" from negotiations with Washington, which have remained stalled since the last escalation between the parties in July.
The head of Iranian diplomacy indicated that "no decision has been made yet to resume negotiations with the United States," although he specified that the mediating countries, Qatar and Pakistan, "are exchanging messages and maintaining contact" with both parties.
