Israel kills Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon
Fragile ceasefire: In fighting in southern Lebanon, Israel's army reports the deaths of several Hezbollah members. The ceasefire remains fragile.
The Israeli army said it killed several fighters of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. According to the military, these "terrorists" had been in the "security zone" in the area of the Ali al-Taher mountain ridge and were "eliminated" during the night. One Israeli soldier was also wounded in the operation. There was initially no reaction from the pro-Iranian Shiite militia.
Hezbollah had dragged Lebanon into the Iran war, which the US and Israel began at the end of February, by firing rockets at Israel shortly after the war began. Israel responded with attacks and a ground offensive. A fragile ceasefire is currently in place between Israel and Lebanon, but it is not recognized by Hezbollah.
An agreement signed last month and brokered by the US stipulates that the Lebanese army will disarm Hezbollah. In addition, the Israeli army is to withdraw from so-called test areas, after which Lebanese soldiers are to be stationed there. Hezbollah also rejects Beirut's negotiations with Israel.
