An Israeli air strike has hit a tent sheltering displaced Palestinians in central Gaza, killing at least one person and wounding several others.

The attack happened early on Monday near al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa. The casualties add to the list of victims as Israel maintains its hostilities in the enclave.

In a post on Telegram, the Israeli army said it targeted two “militants” in the Deir al-Balah area on Sunday night including Muhammad Abdul Nasser Jaber Abu Asad, claiming he was a member of the elite forces of Hamas’s military wing and took part in the October 7 attack on Israel.

The army said the pair had recently been working to carry out operations against its forces and Israelis, and attempting to rebuild Hamas’s capabilities. The statement labelled the activities as a “systematic violation of the ceasefire”.

The ongoing strikes come despite a United States-brokered ceasefire to end Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, and amid diplomatic efforts to disarm Hamas and get Israeli troops to withdraw from the territory.

On Sunday three Palestinians, including a four-year-old child, were killed in Israeli strikes on areas including Khan Younis in southern Gaza and the town of az-Zawayda in the Deir al-Balah region.

A man who was wounded in an attack on Khan Younis in southern Gaza on Sunday died after succumbing to his wounds. Another, wounded in an Israeli airstrike on a cafe near Gaza Port last week, died on Monday.

A total of 1,288 Palestinians have been killed since the October 2025 ceasefire agreement, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The total death toll since the war in Gaza was launched in October 2023 has risen to 73,422, with a further 174,401 wounded.
