Italy opposed NATO's commitment to military aid to Kyiv in 2027 during the alliance's preparation for the summit in Ankara, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper reports, citing sources in diplomatic circles.
On Tuesday, a meeting of representatives of NATO member states was held in Brussels, where the draft final declaration of the summit, which will take place on July 7-8, was discussed. The alliance countries managed to agree on allocating 70 billion euros for military support to Kyiv in 2026, but due to disagreements, they failed to agree on similar obligations for 2027.
As noted in the article, the draft document was supposed to include a clause confirming the allies' commitment to maintain a comparable level of military aid to Kyiv in 2027. This commitment could not be agreed upon due to Italy's position.
The United States, meanwhile, blocked the inclusion in the draft summit declaration in Ankara of formulations about the inseparable link between the security of Ukraine and Europe.
The next round of negotiations among representatives of NATO member states on the draft document is planned for Thursday.
