Italy opposed fixing long-term NATO commitments for military aid to Kyiv for 2027 during preparations for the alliance's summit in Ankara, writes the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, citing diplomatic sources.
On Tuesday, a meeting of representatives of NATO member states took place in Brussels, where the draft final declaration of the summit, which will be held on July 7-8, was discussed. The alliance countries managed to agree on allocating 70 billion euros for military support to Kyiv in 2026, but due to disagreements, they failed to agree on similar commitments for 2027.
According to the publication, the draft document was supposed to include a clause confirming the allies' commitment to maintain a comparable level of military aid to Kyiv in 2027. It was not possible to agree on this commitment due to Italy's position.
The United States, meanwhile, blocked the inclusion in the draft declaration of the Ankara summit of wording on the inextricable link between the security of Ukraine and Europe.
The next round of negotiations of representatives of NATO member states on the draft document is scheduled for Thursday.
