Italy opposed NATO's commitment to provide military aid to Kyiv for 2027 during the preparation of NATO members for the summit in Ankara, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung wrote, citing diplomatic sources.
On Tuesday, a meeting of representatives of NATO member states took place in Brussels, where the draft final declaration of the summit, to be held on July 7-8, was discussed. The alliance countries managed to agree on allocating 70 billion euros for military support to Kyiv in 2026, but due to disagreements, they were unable to agree on similar commitments for 2027.
According to the publication, the draft document was supposed to include a clause confirming the allies' commitment to maintain a comparable level of military aid to Kyiv in 2027. This commitment could not be agreed upon due to Italy's position.
At the same time, the United States blocked the inclusion in the draft declaration of the Ankara summit of language about the inseparable link between the security of Ukraine and Europe.
The next round of negotiations of representatives of NATO member states on the draft document is planned for Thursday.
