The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced a comprehensive solarization plan for the fiscal year 2026-27 to promote sustainable urban development, environmental protection, and efficient energy use. Under the directives of Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, streets in union councils, municipal buildings, and selected highways across the city will be converted to solar energy. A budget of 75 crore rupees has been allocated for this project in the next fiscal year. According to a spokesperson, the primary objective is to reduce reliance on conventional electricity, lower municipal expenses, and promote the use of renewable energy, while also improving public amenities in areas affected by frequent power outages. The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions and improve the efficiency of the municipal system. The Mayor of Karachi stated that the solarization program is a significant step towards modernizing the city's infrastructure and promoting environmentally friendly measures. He added that in light of climate change, a sustainable energy system has become a basic necessity. He further said that KMC has already converted parts of its main office to solar energy, resulting in reduced electricity costs and environmental impact. This model will now be extended to other offices, union councils, and public infrastructure. Under the plan, solar-based municipal facilities will be provided in remote and load-shedding-affected areas to ensure uninterrupted provision of civic services.
