MEADE COUNTY – Due to extremely dangerous fire conditions throughout Meade County, the Meade County Commission has enacted a new resolution, effective immediately.

Recent weather conditions have created an exceptionally high fire risk across the county. Prolonged heat, dry vegetation, and persistent winds have combined to produce conditions where a single spark could quickly develop into a large and destructive wildfire.

Residents and visitors are urged to exercise extreme caution and comply with all provisions of the burn ban. The burn ban prohibits open fires; burn barrels; any activities that produce embers or sparks capable of igniting surround dry material; smoking outdoors; and outdoor grills.

With the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally bringing thousands of visitors to the Black Hills, Meade County welcomes everyone to enjoy the area responsibly. However, current fire conditions require heightened awareness from everyone who lives in or visits the county.

A single careless act could threaten lives, homes, livestock, businesses, and thousands of acres of public and private land.

In addition to the burn ban, Meade County Commissioners also directed the county equalization office to not issue any licenses for temporary vendors who sell fireworks. That ban on selling fireworks will be in effect through Dec. 31.
