Friedrich Merz, the German Chancellor, has stated his commitment to maintaining the unity of his ruling coalition, emphasizing its importance for Germany's "democratic future." This declaration comes in the wake of significant setbacks for his Christian Democratic Unionist (CDU) party in two recent state elections.
"We are determined to live up to the historic challenges our country is facing," Merz remarked, referring to the coalition government formed by the CDU and the Social Democratic Party (SPD).
Merz's leadership has faced increased scrutiny following the election outcomes on Sunday. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, located in the north-east, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party secured the highest number of votes, while the CDU failed to meet the minimum threshold required to be represented in the state parliament.
In Berlin, the CDU finished second to the hard-left Die Linke party, with the AfD also registering substantial gains.
During a press conference on Monday, Merz characterized the result in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as a "heavy blow."
"This election is a profound turning point. It is a dramatic, unprecedented result for the CDU in Germany," he stated.
However, he refuted the notion that his personal low approval ratings were the primary cause of the election defeats.
"The reasons for these election results go far beyond my own person," he insisted.
Merz has been under considerable pressure due to consistently poor approval ratings over recent months, leading to speculation about a potential mid-term "chancellor swap."
When questioned by the BBC on Monday about Merz's tenure, the AfD's co-leader Alice Weidel commented: "Pretty soon, he's going to leave."
These two state elections occurred on Sunday, two weeks after the CDU experienced a halving of its vote share in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, where the AfD achieved a significant victory.
