Meta announced on Tuesday that it will now allow AI agents to set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging, a service that enables companies to connect with customers via WhatsApp conversations.
Previously, this process was more complex, requiring developers to switch between various tools and services like the Developer Console, Meta’s Business Manager, the API reference, and their editor. Now, they can simply ask their preferred AI agent to set up WhatsApp Business messaging by describing their needs in a chat interface.
This functionality is enabled by the new WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, which is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that directly links an AI coding agent, such as Claude, Cursor, Codex, or ChatGPT, to the WhatsApp Business Platform.
This move expands Meta’s existing MCP servers, which already handle ad management, app configuration monitoring, and other social technologies, to include a server specifically designed to streamline business onboarding to WhatsApp. Many other tech companies, including PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google, and Microsoft, also provide MCP servers that allow AI agents to securely interact with their services.
With Meta’s new MCP server, AI agents can manage the setup process for WhatsApp Business, including creating a company’s WhatsApp Business account, adding and verifying its phone number, registering it for Cloud API access, and checking its Terms of Service.
Businesses can also use the AI agent for other tasks, such as creating or editing messaging templates by describing their requirements. Additionally, they can test messages and webhooks, and monitor aspects like Terms of Service, payment methods, and Business Verification.
Meta also noted that its other MCP server, Meta Social Technologies MCP, can be utilized during setup and configuration for discovering API endpoints, searching documentation, and troubleshooting errors.
