10 hours ago Nasdaq Climbs Out of 1.4% Hole in Biggest Comeback Since April

The Nasdaq just staged its biggest comeback since the spring.

The tech-heavy index rose 0.1% after falling more than 1.4% at its low earlier on Thursday. That was good for its largest reversal from an intraday low to positive territory since April 7, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

The S&P 500, which was down 0.6% at its intraday low, rose 0.3% to mark its biggest intraday comeback since July 2. The Dow cruised to a gain of 556 points, or 1.1%.

The day began with more selling of chips and AI stocks. A wave of economic and inflation data didn’t overshadow the selloff, but the AI plays showed signs of life after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said he doesn’t think the chip titan needs to step in and backstop CoreWeave amid a selloff in the provider of AI computing power’s corporate bonds.

The rest of the market was rallying all day, led by gains in healthcare, materials, and financials. Bonds also rallied, sending yields lower. The 10-year Treasury note marked its biggest one-day decline in yield since August.

Shares of companies that are sensitive to higher yields rallied in relief. The Russell 2000, for example, crushed the Nasdaq despite the latter’s late heroics.

The real test will be tomorrow’s session. The calendar is fairly quiet so AI bulls will want to see some actual follow through, rather than another turn lower.
