On Saturday, June 6, NATO announced the launch of Forward Land Forces Finland, a new multinational ground force in Finland and Sweden, aimed at strengthening the defense of NATO's northeastern flank.

The new group includes the newest multinational NATO battle group under the leadership of Sweden, the Alliance's press service reported.

As stated in a statement by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, U.S. General Alexus Grynkiewicz, the region around these two countries is 'one of the most strategically important and most challenging in terms of natural conditions in the world.'

According to him, the new forces, like the Arctic Sentry initiative, will use the Alliance's capabilities to protect NATO territory and ensure the security of the Arctic and the High North, especially in light of Russia's military activity and China's growing interest in the region.

Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen said that the new group will strengthen NATO's deterrence and defense in the High North thanks to forces specializing in operations in Arctic conditions.

According to him, these forces will enhance the security of Finland and neighboring regions, and also give allies the opportunity to practice conducting ground combat operations in Arctic conditions.

Swedish Defense Minister Paul Jonson noted that the deployment of Swedish troops under NATO command as part of the new forces demonstrates Stockholm's serious commitment to strengthening the Alliance's northeastern flank. The creation of the new group was rapid, and cooperation with Finland, NATO, and other allies in this process was close and constructive, the Swedish minister emphasized.

The decision to create Forward Land Forces Finland was made by NATO heads of state and government during the Washington Summit in 2024. The formation of the new structure was completed in less than two years.

The new group will be under the responsibility of the NATO Joint Force Command in Norfolk. Similar Allied ground forces already operate in Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Hungary.
