Netflix is closing two game studios, Night School Studio and Moonloot Games, as it shifts its focus to TV-based party games.
Night School Studio, known for the Oxenfree series, was acquired by Netflix in 2021. The studio recently released a horror experience called Unhinged for TVs and a mobile game in 2025 tied to Black Mirror. Moonloot Games, based in Helsinki, was established in 2022.
Netflix's gaming strategy has evolved from a mobile-first approach with indie titles to a focus on four pillars: kids, party, narrative, and "mainstream" games, with an emphasis on titles streamed to TVs. This pivot began late last year.
"As we continue to prioritize these areas, we see an opportunity to be more focused in our execution, so we are making organizational changes to the business to match those priorities," a Netflix spokesperson told The Verge. The company is also cutting additional roles within its games division, including Tara Voelker, who stated she was the "single accessibility person" on the gaming team.
This follows previous closures and sales of game studios by Netflix, including the studio behind a Squid Game mobile title last year, the sale of Cozy Grove studio Spry Fox, and the closure of a AAA studio in 2024 that had not yet released a game.
