New super grid transformer planned near Three Legged Cross
PLANS have been submitted to build a new electricity transformer and a noise-reducing enclosure at a Dorset substation.
The proposals relate to Mannington Substation on Holt Road, near Three Legged Cross, and were registered by Dorset Council on October 9 under planning reference P/STA/2026/05663.
Planning documents show the scheme would include a Super Grid Transformer, housed alongside a dedicated building designed to reduce noise from its operation.
The substation plays an important role in the regional electricity network, helping to transport power across Dorset and neighbouring areas.
The application comes after major infrastructure work at the site earlier this year, when a 120-tonne transformer was delivered from Poole Harbour in May.
National Grid used specialist haulage vehicles to transport the equipment along a 37-kilometre route to Mannington.
The site is also part of wider electricity network upgrades, including work to refurbish the transmission line linking Mannington with Nursling in Hampshire.
It is not yet clear whether the latest planning application relates to the transformer delivered in May or whether it would allow an additional unit to be installed.
Dorset Council's planning officers are considering the application before making a decision.
