DisCos’ Billing, Collection Rates Fall In June, Leave N48.85bn Revenue Gap
Electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in Nigeria recorded lower billing and collection efficiencies in June 2026, leaving a revenue gap of N48.85 billion between amounts billed and cash actually collected, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
NERC said in its June 2026 factsheet that the 11 DisCos received 315.73 billion kWh of electricity during the month but billed only 240.71 billion kWh, representing a billing efficiency of 76.24 per cent.
The commission said this was a decline of 0.63 percentage points from May, indicating that a smaller share of available power was converted into customer bills.
On collections, the DisCos billed N240.71 billion but recovered N191.86 billion, giving a collection efficiency of 79.71 per cent, down 2.61 percentage points from the previous month.
The difference between the N240.71 billion billed and the N191.86 billion collected amounted to a N48.85 billion revenue gap for June.
NERC also reported that the industry’s revenue recovery efficiency stood at 74.24 per cent in June, down 3.07 percentage points from May.
The regulator said the allowed average tariff was N130.15 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), but DisCos actually collected an average of N96.63/kWh.
Performance varied widely across the DisCos. Eko Disco led on recovery efficiency at 87.04 per cent, followed by Port Harcourt at 86.33 per cent and Benin at 82.23 per cent.
At the lower end, Kaduna recorded the weakest recovery efficiency at 37.03 per cent, followed by Kano at 44.04 per cent and Jos at 51.33 per cent.
In collection efficiency, Benin Disco topped the list at 94 per cent, followed by Ikeja at 89 per cent and Eko at 88.64 per cent.
Kano and Kaduna recorded the lowest collection efficiencies at 42.16 per cent and 46.13 per cent respectively.
"Billing Efficiency: Stood at 76.24 per cent, with total energy billed reaching N240.71 billion out of N315.73 billion energy received," NERC said in the factsheet.
"Collection Efficiency: Recorded at 79.71 per cent, resulting in a total revenue collection of N191.86 billion for the month," the commission added.
"Revenue Recovery Performance: The industry reached an overall Recovery Efficiency of 74.24 per cent," it said.
"Top Performers: Eko (87.04 per cent), Port Harcourt (86.33 per cent), and Benin (82.23 per cent) DisCos stood out with the highest recovery efficiency levels for June," NERC said.
