North Korean leader inspects model greenhouse complex
On June 1, a Vietnam News Agency (VNA) correspondent in Northeast Asia cited information from the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) stating that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected the Sinuiju Greenhouse Complex in North Pyongan Province to check production and construction progress of related facilities.
According to KCNA, the leader's inspection took place on May 31. Accompanying Kim Jong Un were his wife Ri Sol Ju and daughter Ju Ae. Kim Yo Jong, the leader's sister, along with many senior officials of the Workers' Party of Korea, also participated in the trip.
During the inspection, Kim examined hydroponic and soil-based vegetable greenhouses, a test greenhouse, and rapeseed fields within the large-scale agricultural complex in Sinuiju. The North Korean leader expressed satisfaction when told that the farms are now harvesting hundreds of tons of vegetables daily.
He also emphasized the need to reduce energy consumption in vegetable production, ensure suitable growing conditions for each crop to cut costs and maintain year-round production. Kim said it is necessary to diversify crop varieties, enhance fertilizer management scientifically and technologically, and promote competition among farms.
Kim also mentioned measures to boost agricultural mechanization, automate transport systems, expand fruit and vegetable storage and distribution points, and establish a system to disseminate advanced agricultural technology and train specialized personnel for the greenhouse industry.
Additionally, Kim checked the construction progress of a hospital, a public service center, and a fruit and vegetable processing plant being built within the farm area. These items are currently about 50% complete.
The North Korean leader stated that after completion, the Wihwado area would become "a model and standard for regional transformation in the new era." KCNA also reported that Kim has visited the project many times since its groundbreaking. In 2025 alone, he inspected it twice and attended the completion ceremony of some items in February.
North Korea is pushing ahead with the construction of a large-scale greenhouse farm in Wihwado, Sinuiju city, covering about 4.3 km², approximately 1.5 times the size of South Korea's Yeouido Island. This area suffered heavy damage from floods in the summer of 2024. Pyongyang considers this project part of its policy for local development and improving national people's livelihoods.
