State and Omaha metro-area agencies are teaming up to host a multi-agency resource center event for Millard Woods Estates residents affected by historic rains and flash flooding this month, the Salvation Army announced in a press release.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 9025 "I" St. in the Millard West High School Cafeteria, which is about three blocks west of 90th Street.
Here, those affected by the flooding can connect with a variety of social service agency disaster-relief services.
- The Salvation Army will provide shelter, food, and other essential needs.
- Salvation Army volunteers will assist with shelter and other needs.
- Catholic Charities will provide financial assistance and other support services.
- CHI Health will provide medical needs assistance.
- The Douglas County Health Department will provide public health services.
- The American Red Cross will provide financial assistance.
- The City of Omaha will provide 50-minute water bill credits for all affected Millard Woods Estates households.
Residents seeking a water bill credit must bring a utility bill and proof of residency.
Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert said at a press conference last week that the Sept. 20-Oct. 1 rainstorm and flooding of Millard West High School’s grounds has washed away more than 30 million gallons of water in Millard Woods Estates. She said the water came from the school’s roof, and the school’s roof was up to something.
“We are very fortunate that no one was hurt or had to be evacuated from the West High roof that blew off the building,” she said.
In the aftermath of the flooding, the City of Omaha has set up a temporary cooling center at omaha.gov/coolingcenter. Centers provide shelter for those seeking to escape the heat, meals, cleaning supplies and more.
A number of other services at the event can address needs related to the flooding.
