OpenAI and Broadcom Release First Jalapeño Inference Chip
OpenAI yesterday jointly released the first chip "Jalapeño" with Broadcom, designed for large language model inference tasks.
OpenAI stated that Jalapeño is the first generation AI accelerator of a multi-generation computing platform. The chip architecture was designed by OpenAI from scratch based on model roadmap, inference kernels, serving systems, and product requirements, while Broadcom was responsible for silicon implementation, networking, and connectivity technologies, and Celestica participated in board, cabinet, and system integration.
Key disclosed progresses include:
- Engineering samples have been running machine learning tasks in the lab at target frequency and power consumption, including GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark.
- Early testing shows that Jalapeño's per-watt performance exceeds current state-of-the-art; full performance technical report will be released in the coming months.
- The chip went from initial design to manufacturing tape-out in only 9 months, which OpenAI claims is one of the fastest ASIC development cycles in high-performance advanced semiconductors.
- The platform is planned to start deployment by the end of 2026 and expand to multiple generations in subsequent years; Broadcom CEO Hock Tan stated that the platform will support building gigawatt-scale data centers with partners like Microsoft.

Omdia: Global smartphone average selling price expected to rise to 3800 yuan this year
Market research firm Omdia recently released a report showing that the global smartphone market is experiencing a structural change of "volume decline and price increase" this year. Global smartphone shipments will drop 12.2% year-on-year to 1.093 billion units, a decrease of 152 million units from last year; but the total market value is expected to grow 6.1% year-on-year.
Omdia predicts that the global smartphone average selling price will rise from $467 last year to $565 this year (approximately 3842 yuan), an increase of $98, or about 21%, both the price level and increase are record highs for the industry.
The main reason for the price increase is supply chain cost pressure. Omdia said that in the first quarter of this year, the average price of DRAM and NAND flash memory rose more than 80% quarter-on-quarter, and continued to rise in the second quarter.
Omdia also expects that the global smartphone market contraction will continue into next year, but the decline in shipments will narrow to 0.9%. Because the manufacturing cost of smartphones below $100 is still difficult to significantly reduce, substantial recovery in industry shipments is not expected until 2028.
SpaceX stock price drops, Musk's net worth falls back to $957 billion
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Elon Musk's personal net worth has fallen back to $957 billion, a drop of $443 billion from the high of about $1.4 trillion on June 16.
The decline in Musk's wealth mainly comes from the drop in SpaceX stock price. Bloomberg data shows that the book value of Musk's SpaceX shares is about $744 billion, accounting for nearly 80% of his total net worth; as of the close on June 23 local time, SpaceX stock price was $156, down more than 30% from its peak.
Musk still ranks first on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The index shows that second-ranked Larry Page's net worth is about $297 billion, still more than $660 billion behind Musk.

"Splash screen ads gone" trends on Weibo, Baidu Maps, Gaode Maps, etc. reported to have removed splash screen ads
Recently, "splash screen ads gone" became a trending topic on Weibo. Many netizens and bloggers reported that apps like Baidu Maps, Gaode Maps, and NetEase Cloud Music have canceled splash screen ads.
The discussion originated from a video posted by a blogger. The blogger claimed that while driving and using a navigation app, due to the "shake to open" splash screen ad triggered by road bumps, the page jumped to a third-party platform, affecting driving safety. The controversy subsequently sparked a concentrated discussion among users about splash screen ads, accidental touch jumps, and ad countdown experiences.
Tests by Beijing Daily showed that among 20 commonly used shopping and social apps, 6 apps including Tieba, Weibo, Zhihu, Damai, and Mango TV still retain splash screen ads; 14 apps including Taobao, JD, Xiaohongshu, Pinduoduo, Xianyu, Douyin, and Dianping have no visible splash screen ads, opening directly to the home page.
Amazon places ads on ChatGPT for the first time, still refuses to open shopping data to AI
According to Business Insider, Amazon has started placing ads on ChatGPT, becoming one of the most notable retailers appearing in OpenAI's emerging advertising business. The ads direct users back to Amazon's own marketplace, where Amazon controls the shopping experience and transaction process.
E-commerce analyst Juozas Kaziukėnas said this move is "symbolic" because Amazon had basically not participated in AI shopping initiatives that allow third-party chatbots and AI agents to aggregate its product prices and inventory data.
A screenshot posted by Kaziukėnas on LinkedIn on Monday showed that when users search for coffee machines, ChatGPT recommends several products, followed by a sponsored Amazon ad titled "Top-Rated Kitchen Gear."
However, the report also points out the contradiction in Amazon's AI strategy: the company is willing to pay to reach ChatGPT's huge user base, but is still protecting its own shopping data, restricting AI systems from accessing and using these data.
Amazon has previously taken multiple measures to restrict AI crawling and data collection. Kaziukėnas said that last year Amazon stopped providing product feeds to Google Shopping and updated code to block multiple crawlers, including OpenAI; earlier this year, Amazon also won a court order to block Perplexity's AI agent.
