During a session held in the US Congress, current data on the F-35 program, considered one of the world's most advanced fighter jets, were shared. Officials announced that more than 1,300 F-35 fighter jets are actively deployed worldwide, with 832 of them in the US inventory.
Lieutenant General Gregory L. Masiello, Director of the F-35 Joint Program Office, spoke before the US Senate Armed Services Committee, informing senators about the program's capacity.
F-35 fleet operates from 42 bases and 13 aircraft carriers
Masiello stated that the F-35 is a unique fighter jet with multi-role capability and noted that the global fleet is deployed across 42 different military bases.
He also said that F-35s operate from a total of 13 aircraft carriers internationally, 10 of which belong to the US Navy.
Active role in recent military operations
Lieutenant General Masiello indicated that F-35 fighter jets have been used in numerous military operations in recent years. Highlighting the aircraft's advanced sensor and targeting systems, Masiello noted that the F-35 can effectively engage hard-to-reach targets and provides superior situational awareness on the battlefield.
Maintenance costs and operational readiness debated
Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, who spoke at the committee meeting, said that F-35s will play a critical role in high-risk operations in the future.
However, Kelly expressed that significant challenges remain regarding the integration of the aircraft into the fleet, achieving full operational capability, and sustaining them in service.
Senator Kelly also shared concerns that the long-term maintenance and operating costs of the F-35 fleet could put serious pressure on the US Department of Defense budget.
