The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee is surveying farmers regarding their experiences after the latest Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) application window closed prematurely.
The application window shut early because farmers utilized the entire £233 million budget in less than a single day.
The committee is utilizing a new survey to gather feedback from both farmers who successfully applied and those who were unable to.
Alistair Carmichael MP, Chair of the Efra Committee, stated: "At a time when DEFRA needed to build a better level of trust with farmers, the last thing they needed was a day like last Tuesday.
"So many farmers were disappointed by the SFI application process and have been left in a place where planning their business is more difficult than ever."
Defra had previously announced that the application window would remain open until the allocated budget was depleted.
Mr Carmichael added: "We have already heard commitments from the Secretary of State and others to listen and to learn.
"This is where there is a role for the select committee to play.
"We want to hear from as many farmers and land agents as possible about their experiences that day and since then.
"We especially want to hear from those who lost out and how they will farm without the help they might have received from the SFI.
"That real-life experience will shape the questions we put to ministers and officials in the weeks and months ahead."
The SFI had allocated £233 million for this application window, intended to compensate farmers and land managers for undertaking work that benefits the environment, supports food production, and enhances productivity.
Mr Carmichael commented: "I know this is a busy time of year for many farmers, so we have kept the survey as short and straightforward as possible.
"I hope that this will allow a wide range of responses."
