The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has officially designated the Phu Quoc fish sauce making craft as a national intangible cultural heritage. The decision, dated May 27, 2021, acknowledges the craft's long-standing presence and cultural importance on Phu Quoc island.
Historically, the fish sauce making process in Phu Quoc has existed for over 200 years, becoming a vital part of the local livelihood and culture. The industry saw significant growth after 1945, establishing Phu Quoc fish sauce as a well-known brand both domestically and internationally.
Phu Quoc fish sauce previously achieved geographical indication status in 2001 and received protected designation of origin status from the European Union in 2013. This latest recognition as a national intangible cultural heritage adds another layer to its recognized value and cultural significance.
