France's largest carmaker sees record sales in Africa’s top car manufacturing country

Following a notable increase in car sales in Morocco during the first half of 2026, the North African nation now stands as one of Renault Group's most significant overseas markets.

  • Morocco saw a 13.7% increase in Renault's car sales in the first half of 2026, making it one of the company's most important overseas markets.
  • The country contributed significantly to Renault's global growth, with its sales rise outpacing increases in Mexico, Turkey, and Brazil.
  • Morocco surpassed South Africa as Africa's largest vehicle manufacturer in 2025, producing one million cars, a 79% increase from 2024.
  • Government incentives, tax breaks, and free trade agreements have attracted major automakers like Renault and Stellantis to Morocco, boosting production and exports.

Between January and June, 49,821 passenger and light commercial cars were sold in Morocco, according to Renault, a 13.7% increase over the same time previous year.

Morocco became one of the company's best markets outside of Europe as a result of the performance, underscoring its increasing significance to Renault's objectives for global development.

The Moroccan market was a significant contributor to Renault's development outside of sales, increasing by 61.2%, Mexico, with 16.3% growth, Turkey, with 15.4% growth, and Brazil, with a 5.3% gain, as seen in Morocco World News.

Renault's great performance in Morocco occurred although its global sales remained basically constant.

The carmaker delivered 1,165,133 vehicles globally in the first six months of 2026, a 0.4% decrease from the same time in 2025.

According to the corporation, the results reflect its goal of focusing on higher-value sales while increasing its electric vehicle line.

Renault also reported that sales of its flagship Renault brand outside Europe climbed by 2.8% for the second year in a row, driven by rising demand in overseas markets.

Morocco is still key to Renault's production and export plan. The country is the automaker's second-largest production base globally, with key manufacturing facilities in Tangier and Casablanca.

Vehicles built at these facilities serve both the home market and a number of other nations, cementing Morocco's position as a vital automotive production hub in Africa and the Mediterranean area.

The most recent sales data also highlight Morocco's rising importance in the global automobile sector, as foreign manufacturers continue to invest in the country's developing manufacturing and export capacities.

Morocco’s car industry

In January, it was reported that Morocco overtook South Africa as Africa’s largest vehicle manufacturer in 2025.

Morocco produced one million automobiles in 2025, a 79% increase over the 559,645 units produced in the whole year of 2024.

The achievement propels the North African nation ahead of South Africa, which has dominated automobile production on the continent for decades.

The government had an important role in the boom, with policies meant to stimulate private-sector engagement in manufacturing.

Tax breaks and free trade agreements with important worldwide markets, such as the European Union, the United States, and China, helped Renault and Stellantis develop manufacturing units in 2012 and 2019, respectively.

These investments considerably enhanced Morocco's production capacity and export potential.

Renault in Europe

Renault Group, in 2025, sold 821,092 passenger and commercial cars within Europe, a 1.3% decrease from the previous year.

With 528,849 vehicles sold, up 2.6%, the Renault brand continued to hold its position as the second-largest carmaker in Europe.

In the B-segment, the Renault 5 E-Tech emerged as the best-selling electric car in Europe.

The car company also outsold Stellantis in 2025 to take the top spot among French automakers in terms of sales.

Additionally, the top-selling automobile models in France were the Peugeot 208 and the Renault Clio, while the top-selling car brands were once again Renault, Peugeot, and Dacia.
