On July 5, it was reported that gas stations across most parts of Russia have been lining up for days, with gasoline and diesel supply remaining tight, and many regions have implemented fuel restrictions. According to reports, retail gasoline prices in some parts of Russia have climbed to among the highest in Europe. In fact, fuel rationing has spread to core cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg months ago. The fuel shortage is unexpectedly heating up Russia's new energy vehicle market, with Chinese brands becoming the biggest beneficiaries. Zabelin, founder of EN Cars, a company specializing in selling Chinese brand cars, told the media that since the fuel situation became complicated, market demand has multiplied, and consumer interest is rising in both economical and high-end models. According to a Moscow dealer, sales of Chinese electric vehicles have jumped from just a few units per month to several units per day. Data from analysis agency Autostat and the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade show that in the first five months of this year, Russia sold about 24,600 new plug-in hybrid vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 125%; pure electric vehicle sales rose 19% to 4,460 units. The growth rate of plug-in hybrids far exceeds that of pure electric vehicles, reflecting that under conditions of insufficient charging infrastructure, consumers prefer a compromise solution that can use both fuel and electricity. Autostat head Udalov said that sales accelerated further after the fuel shortage worsened in June, with 1,754 new plug-in hybrids registered last week, an increase of nearly one-third from the previous week and nearly 50% higher than the weekly average this year. However, Udalov also pointed out that the absolute sales volume of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids is still low, and manufacturers and importers were not prepared for this gasoline crisis, with insufficient inventory. For reference, new energy vehicles accounted for only 4.3% of total Russian car sales last year, with vast territory, severe cold climate, and limited charging network long restricting market development. But he believes that if the crisis continues, sales will see significant growth in the near future.
