Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra tipped to use Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy globally
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra are tipped to launch with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chips across global markets, replacing previous regional processor strategies.
Samsung is expected to introduce the Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup at its upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event later this month, and a new report suggests the company is making a notable change to its premium foldable strategy. According to PhoneArena, both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra are likely to feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor across all global markets.
The report cites a joint Instagram post by Samsung Mobile and Qualcomm Snapdragon that showcases the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset. While the device itself is not shown, the silhouette in the teaser is believed to resemble the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8, indicating that Samsung may use the customised chipset across both Fold models.
Snapdragon chip tipped for both Fold models
If the report is accurate, this will be the first time Samsung equips its Galaxy Z Fold series with a "for Galaxy" version of Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor. Previous Galaxy Z Fold models used the standard Snapdragon platform.
The teaser also suggests Samsung will not follow a regional chipset strategy for the Fold lineup. Instead, both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra are expected to ship with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy in all markets.
What the 'for Galaxy' processor means
Qualcomm's "for Galaxy" chips are custom versions of its flagship processors developed for Samsung devices. These variants generally offer slightly higher clock speeds than the standard versions, along with software-level optimisations.
For comparison, the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy used in the Galaxy S25 Ultra reportedly delivered around a 3.5 percent higher clock speed than the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. The upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy is expected to bring similar improvements, along with optimisations designed for Samsung's foldable displays.
Galaxy Z Flip 8 may continue with dual-chip strategy
Unlike the Fold series, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 is tipped to continue Samsung's dual-chip approach. According to the report, South Korea and major European markets may receive the handset powered by Samsung's in-house 2nm Exynos 2600 processor.
Meanwhile, markets including the US, Canada, China, Japan and several other regions are expected to get the Galaxy Z Flip 8 with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset.
Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Flip 8, Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 during its upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event later this month.
