Galaxy Z Fold 8, Fold 8 Ultra have a new, stronger display protection

Samsung has just launched its new flagship smartphones with book-style foldable displays, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Both models bring several upgrades over the previous device in the lineup, the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
While the brand highlighted most of those improvements during the Galaxy Unpacked event and in the specifications sheet, the company hasn’t advertised all of the upgrades they bring. One of them comes in the form of the display protection.
Since Samsung didn’t mention what kind of protection the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 feature for their cover displays, we reached out to the tech giant about it. The brand said that the cover displays of both phones feature Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3.
Two times stronger display protection
That’s a newer version of display protection compared to the one the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has, which is Corning Gorilla Glass 2. While Samsung didn’t say what improvements it offers or how much stronger the new one is compared to the old one, Corning gives us an idea.
Corning says that in lab tests, the Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 survived drops of up to one meter, whereas the Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 survived drops of more than two meters on a surface replicating concrete. That means the new one is twice as strong as the old one.
In comparison, the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s Gorilla Armor 2 survived drops of up to 2.2 meters. Going by those numbers, it is possible that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 offer a similar level of display protection as the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
