Rescue teams are searching the rubble of a collapsed multistorey building in New Delhi, India, that killed at least six people and trapped dozens more. The building, which housed mostly students, was located near a Delhi University campus in the Satya Niketan area.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) reported treating several victims, with five brought in dead and one succumbing to injuries later. Crews from India’s disaster response agency, police, and firefighters are working to clear debris using earthmovers and detection dogs. A nearby building was evacuated due to concerns about its stability.
Fire officer Abhilash Malik stated that up to 40 people might still be trapped under the rubble. The exact number of survivors and the cause of the collapse are not yet clear.
Videos circulating online show a man trapped under the rubble calling for help, and residents attempting rescues before official teams arrived.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized the priority of saving students' lives and vowed to hold those responsible accountable. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office extended condolences and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Building collapses are a recurring issue in parts of India, particularly during the monsoon season from June to September. A similar incident occurred on Saturday when a three-storey building collapsed in northern India after heavy rain, though no casualties were reported. In 2025, a residential building collapse in New Delhi's northeastern district resulted in at least 11 fatalities.
