Tuesday’s big stock stories: What’s likely to move the market in the next trading session

Big morning reports on ‘Squawk Box’
Caterpillar, which has seen a major increase in the stock price due to its role in data center construction, is up 18% in six months. The stock is up 45% year to date, but down 6.7% in the past three months. The stock is off 22.6% from the June 30 high.
McDonald’s is down 7.5% in three months. The stock hit a high on March 2 but has dropped 22% since.
Merck is off 5.4% from the July 28 high. The stock is up about 14% in three months.
Pfizer is down 13% from the April 2 high. The stock is down around 5% in three months.
Two big names on ‘Squawk Box’ Tuesday morning
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is on at 7:30 a.m. ET. The Philadelphia Federal Reserve President Anna Paulson is on at 8 a.m.
One big topic will be the U.S. intervention in the Japanese yen. The iShares MSCI Japan ETF (EWJ) is up 15% year to date and it’s off 4.7% from the June high.
After the bell on ‘Closing Bell: Overtime’
Advanced Micro Devices: The stock is up 34% in three months, but shares have stumbled since hitting a high on June 30. AMD is down 17% from that level. CNBC TV’s Kristina Partsinevelos will have the numbers and the instant stock reaction. The options market shows implied volatility on the stock at 7.35%, meaning traders are preparing for shares to move up or down by that amount on Tuesday.
SpaceX
The stock hit a high on June 16, hitting $225.64 a share. Since then, it has fallen about 50%, closing at $114.53 on Monday. CNBC TV’s Morgan Brennan covers the company and is watching for the quarterly report. She’ll have the instant stock reaction, previews throughout the day and analysis when the numbers come out. A lot is happening with this stock in the next few days as more shares will be released to the market.
Snap
Snap reported better-than-expected revenue for the second quarter Monday afternoon. CEO Evan Spiegel told investors the company “saw improving momentum in our advertising business.” Spiegel will be on “Squawk Box” Tuesday morning with Becky Quick, Andrew Ross Sorkin and Joe Kernen. The stock is up more than 7% after hours. Shares are down 44% in the past year. This is now a $5 dollar stock. Back in 2021, it was an $83 dollar stock.
Palantir Technologies
The stock is up about 15% after hours after Palantir posted earnings. The implied volatility, by the way, was 11%. Palantir beat earnings expectations and showed a 93% year-over-year revenue jump.
