STMicroelectronics has combined altitude and underwater-depth monitoring over 50 meters in a single MEMS sensor that saves space, simplifies circuitry, and trims bill-of-materials costs in wearables and outdoor equipment.

By providing two selectable full scales in one compact package, the LPS27DEWO is suitable for sports cameras, smart rings, smartwatches, and other outdoor and underwater equipment. With its extended underwater pressure range of 6060hPa, the sensor can provide accurate information for recreational and enthusiast divers when ascending from below 40 meters - the critical depth for decompression. The sensor remains robust when exposed to water pressure at depths of up to 110 meters.

Featuring a 2.7mm x 2.7mm 10-lead LGA footprint, the LPS27DEWO is housed in a robust 1.7mm-high cylindrical metal lid package that ensures easy sealing integration and high overpressure resistance. While pressure sensing benefits from minimal noise, contributing towards high accuracy of ±0.5% at full-scale, the sensor also leverages a new black potting gel that eliminates light-induced error. This removes variability under strong lighting in wearable applications, ensuring dependable elevation or depth readings in all environments.

The LPS27DEWO also facilitates electrical design, with 1.2V I2C, SPI, and I3C digital interfaces and very low operating current of just 1.7µA at 3.8Pa.

The LPS27DEWO is in production now and available from $2.18 for orders of 1000 pieces.
