The Government has dismantled a New Plymouth research and development centre set up by Labour to investigate new energy sources and help Taranaki transition away from oil and gas.

Although there was no announcement of the move, Budget documents show the Ara Ake centre’s $6 million a year funding will be cut from July 1. Energy Minister Simeon Brown confirmed the decision, in response to questions from Newsroom, saying it was a “tough decision”.
