WASHINGTON: The head of US European Command has warned the Pentagon that without additional naval resources, he may no longer be able to sustain the current level of support for Israel’s air defense against Iranian strikes, The Washington Post reported.

According to the publication, Gen. Alexus Grynkewich privately informed senior defense officials this week that mounting demands on American forces could soon leave Washington choosing between defending Israel and prioritizing the security of the US homeland.

The reported warning came as the conflict between US and Iran escalated, placing increasing pressure on Washington’s military resources.

The report said the warning reflected growing concerns within the Pentagon over the sustainability of current operations as military commanders compete for limited resources needed to meet multiple security commitments.

Israeli media also reported that the country had raised its alert level over concerns Iran could launch ballistic missile attacks even if Tel Aviv does not initially participate in any expanded US military campaign.

Demands of the war have strained US military assets at a time when Washington is also seeking to protect commercial shipping through key waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, following months of regional escalation.

The US has expanded its military presence in the region since fighting intensified, deploying additional naval and air assets while working alongside allies to deter further escalation and protect maritime trade routes vital to global energy supplies.

US European Command plays a central role in coordinating American military operations across Europe and the eastern Mediterranean, including support for Israel’s missile defense, while also maintaining readiness to respond to security threats involving NATO allies.
