Trump Media, the company behind President Donald Trump's Truth Social platform, reported a significant loss of $238 million (£176 million) for the period between April and June. This substantial loss, more than ten times greater than the same period last year, is attributed in part to the company's ventures into areas beyond media, including cryptocurrencies.
Despite the financial setback, the company has stated its intention to refocus on its core social media mission. This includes a controversial service designed to offer faster access to market-moving posts from influential users on the platform. Kevin McGurn, the interim CEO of Trump Media and Technology Group, indicated that over ten customers have already signed up for this new service.
The company's revenue for the quarter stood at $1.7 million, an 89% increase compared to the previous year. However, the overall loss was exacerbated by a decline in the value of cryptocurrencies. As of the end of the second quarter, Trump Media and Technology Group reported total assets of $2 billion, with approximately $1.9 billion in financial assets, encompassing cash, short-term investments, and digital currencies.
Analysts, such as Markus Thielen from 10x Research, suggest that Trump Media operates more like a crypto holdings firm with a media company attached, and that its losses are largely driven by this strategy. While the company is diversifying into areas like social media, these ventures have not yet generated substantial revenue.
In July, Trump Media announced its plan to provide Wall Street traders with expedited access to posts on Truth Social, where Trump often shares his announcements. This initiative has raised legal and ethical questions, particularly concerning the potential for the company, where the Trump family remains the majority shareholder, to profit from the former president's public statements.
Trump Media stated in its earnings report that the new service is "expected to provide the company with a new revenue stream." McGurn expressed optimism about the company's momentum and assured shareholders of more frequent updates on their progress.
