Iran has offered humanitarian assistance to Venezuela following the deadly earthquakes that devastated parts of the South American country, as Tehran continues to strengthen ties with one of its closest political allies.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Thursday that Tehran stood with the Venezuelan people and was ready to provide any assistance needed to support relief and recovery efforts after the disaster.

Writing on X, Araghchi expressed condolences to the Venezuelan government and the families of those killed, describing the earthquakes as a tragic event and reaffirming Iran’s readiness to help manage the humanitarian response.

The offer comes as Venezuelan authorities continue search-and-rescue operations after the powerful earthquakes, with more than 11,000 people reported missing and the official death toll continuing to rise. Emergency crews remain searching collapsed buildings as concerns grow that many victims remain trapped beneath the rubble.

Iran and Venezuela have maintained close political and economic relations for years, with both governments expanding cooperation in energy, trade and strategic sectors while facing extensive U.S. sanctions. The two countries have repeatedly described each other as key partners in resisting Western pressure.

The humanitarian gesture also comes at a sensitive diplomatic moment, as indirect contacts between Washington and Tehran continue over a possible broader agreement following recent military tensions involving Iran and Israel. While discussions remain focused on regional security and Iran’s nuclear programme, deep disagreements persist over sanctions, Iran’s regional activities and Israel’s security concerns, leaving prospects for a comprehensive deal uncertain.

Twin earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude struck Venezuela earlier this week, causing widespread destruction in and around Caracas and other northern regions. Officials have warned that casualty figures could rise further as rescue teams continue clearing debris and assessing damage across the affected areas.
