Millions of properties across the UK are at risk of flooding, with a new government website now offering practical advice and tools to help people prepare.

The Environment Agency estimates that around 6.3 million homes and businesses could be affected by flooding.

Just over a decade ago, Storm Desmond flooded over 5,000 homes and 1,000 businesses across Cumbria.

As part of Flood Action Week, residents are being encouraged to check their flood risk using their postcode on the new website, which also provides guidance on what to do if flooding is expected.

The Met Office has warned of a wetter, stormier winter ahead due to El Niño, which has the potential to increase flooding.

The website allows users to sign up for flood alerts and offers step-by-step advice for staying safe during a flood.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service is supporting the campaign, saying on social media: "Knowing just one action to take during a flood can reduce the effects on your home and family, and even save a life.

"This #FloodActionWeek, make it your aim to know what to do in a flood."

Recommended actions to take during flood action week include: planning which items will need moving to safety (most likely upstairs), learning how to turning off gas, electricity and water in your home, checking that your insurance covers flood damage and to set up flood warnings.

In the event of a flood, residents are urged to follow advice for emergency services in the area.
