United Utilities Plans Underground Stormwater Tank to Protect Windermere

Plans have been revealed for a new underground tank to help protect Windermere’s water quality.

United Utilities has announced its intention to build the storage tank near the Glebe.

The company said it will be inviting the public to learn more at two forthcoming events ahead of it submitting planning permission later this summer.

If planning permission is granted, the 30-metre diameter tank would be built underground and would have the capacity to hold around 10,000 cubic metres of stormwater, equivalent to four Olympic-sized swimming pools.

This new facility aims to reduce the frequency of storm overflow operations in the area, consequently improving the quality of water in Windermere.

The construction would take place on land off Glebe Road, and United Utilities has pledged to work with local stakeholders to minimise disruptions to the community.

The project is expected to begin in 2027 and conclude in early 2030.

The drop-in events will be held on Tuesday 16 June, at the Belsfield Hotel in Bowness-on-Windermere, and on Wednesday 17 June, at the Marchesi Centre in Winderemere, both from 4pm to 7pm.

United Utilities is set to invest £200 million across the Windermere catchment over the next four years to reduce storm overflow operations and improve the quality of treated wastewater.

This project is part of a broader initiative to improve water and wastewater infrastructure across the North West, with United Utilities investing more than £13 billion to protect and enhance over 500 kilometres of rivers, lakes and bathing waters, while safeguarding drinking water supplies for millions of customers.
